International Competition Score (ICS)
A single number that represents how competitive an athlete has been at international level.
Every athlete receives a competition score for each international competition they finish. The sum of those scores is their ICS, so the total grows with every international appearance.
How a competition score is calculated
The score is the number of competitors in the athlete’s category, multiplied by the competition level factor, divided by their placing:
score = (competitors × level factor) ÷ placing
Competition level factors
- 4 – Olympic Games
- 3 – World Championships
- 2 – Continental championships and games
- 1 – Other, including U17, U20 and U23 events
Worked example
Ten competitors in a category at the Olympic Games and the athlete places fifth: (10 × 4) ÷ 5 = 8. The athlete adds 8 to their ICS.
Bombouts
A bombout (no total) in any competition scores −1, so repeated failures to total pull an athlete’s ICS down.
